Active Week 2019

Our Active Week took place on May 7th – 10th. We worked hard to provide FUN and INCLUSIVE physical activity opportunities for ALL members of the school community. We wanted to allow our students to experience a wide variety of sports in our attempt to achieve 60 minutes of activity each day.

Wake Up, Shake Up

Ms. McKenna’s 4th and 5th kindly lead our Wake Up, Shake Up dance routine every morning to the song Cheerleader. All the girls enjoyed dancing and singing along. What an energetic way to start our mornings!

Tuesday 7th May

On Tuesday morning, our senior girls were treated to a visit from Fergal O’Callaghan who delivered a presentation on the envolvement of women in rugby. The girls all felt very empowered after it. Fergal also carried out rugby workshops with many of the classes.

On Tuesday afternoon, Lucy Kernan gave the girls an insight into Gaelic football. The girls thoroughly enjoyed engaging in these GAA stations that helped introduce and develop essential Gaelic football skills in the girls.

Rebecca Kerr carried out Irish dancing workshops with out infant classes. All the girls enjoyed practicing their 123’s 💃🏻

Wednesday 8th July

On Wednesday, the girls got a chance to try their hand at Karate. Many girls had never tried Karate before so the excitement levels were high in SMNT! A lot of fun was had.

The younger classes also had their turn at rugby on Wednesday.

Thursday 9th May

Lucy Kernan then brought hockey to Scoil Mhuire an Trócaire on Thursday. The girls enjoyed trying a new sport and the challenge of using hockey sticks.

Friday 10th May

It was FitKid Fridays to end Active week with a bang. Niall delivered 30 minutes of intense activity to the girls of SMNT.

Lunchtime activities

In an attempt to ensure all girls were reaching their 60 minutes of activity a day during Active Week, lunchtime activities were organized. Some girls attended a jiving workshop with Ms.Sheridan and a multi-sports activity session with Ms.McGeeney. The infants were also given equipment at lunch to ensure they were staying active.

10 @ 10

During Active Week, all classes made a fantastic effort at participating in 10 @ 10. This helped the girls edge that bit closer to achieving their 60 minutes of activity a day. We also heard it put a few teachers to the test too 😉

Everyone at Social Mhuire na Trócaire would like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who made Active Week possible, especially those who volunteered from the local community.

Tour of Europe Challenge ~ Update

The Be Active Committee are delighted to announced we have reached our second destination The Eiffel Tour in our Tour of Europe challenge. As a school, we ran 344 laps to reach this destination.

We have now set our eyes on the BRANDENBURG GATE in Berlin, Germany. We have 990 laps to run to reach our third destination. All the girls are enjoying learning about each famous monument along the way.

Easter Egg Hunt

Here in Senior Infants we have been working hard learning all about addition. So we decided to put our addition skills to the test during our Easter Egg Hunt. Check it out!

Spring Clean!

All the girls in Senior Infants decided to give our much loved yard a good Spring clean! They loved using aprons and gloves to help clean up.

Scooting Workshop

Today we were very lucky to have a visit from the lovely Caroline who taught us all about safety when scooting and the correct technique to use. We had so much fun!

March Madness

During the month of March, we’ve been learning all about Spring in Senior Infants!

All the girls enjoyed learning about all the signs of spring – from the buds on the trees outside to the beautiful daffodils blooming around our school.

We also decided to explore Spring through our Aistear stations. We made beautiful flowers using playdough, sequenced the lifecycle of a frog at the cutting and sticking table, painted cherry blossom trees at the art table, had fun on the farm at our small world table and finally had lots of fun being florists in our flower shop. Have a look!

A visit from Ruth Campbell

As part of our World Book Day celebrations, we were very lucky to get a visit from an author. The lovely Ruth Campbell visited our classroom to talk all about books. We loved chatting to her about our favourite stories and asking her questions about being an author. Ruth then read parts of her fantastic book ‘Mr. Wisscoccally’ to us. WE LOVED IT! She very kindly gifted us a signed copy of her book and we can’t wait to read it again during story time.

February Aistear Theme – Space

During the month of February, Senior Infants have been learning all about the theme ‘Space’. We spent two weeks learning lots of fascinating facts about Space before we went into our Aistear Stations. It was a very popular theme because it was so interesting and lots of fun!
Over the month, we learned all about the solar system, astronauts and the first moon landing. We learned all about the stars, the moon and the planets. We now know that the sun is actually a giant star and the position of all the planets in relation to the sun (thanks to a very clever song!). We discussed what it would be like to be an astronaut in space, watched some you tube clips of astronauts brushing their teeth and washing their hair and even how they go to the toilet in Space!! We read a very funny book called Aliens Love Underpants and listed the top ten things astronauts would need to bring to space. In our history lesson, we also heard all about the first man to walk on the moon, Neil Armstrong, and learned all about the crew in Apollo 11. We really enjoyed watching the video of the first moon landing from 1969; our favourite part was when Neil and Buzz danced around on the moon. We learned that Neil Armstrong’s footprint is still on the moon because there is no wind there! We even wrote a short poem about USA and Russia’s race to get the first man on the moon. At Music time we learned lots of lovely songs such as the very catchy Planet Song to help us remember facts about our planets. Have a look at our photos to see how much fun we were having!

At the Role Play area we had the opportunity to take on the role of an astronaut in The Space Ship. Here we had to fill in a space passport, travel to space, enter data into the Log Book using all the information learned during the teaching weeks.

In the construction area, we made space ships from Lego.

In the creative area, we drew our favourite pair of underpants from the story ‘Aliens love underpants’.

At the writing area, we wrote the ten things we would take to space with us.

At the playdough station, we created aliens with our playdough.
